Tile Floor Installation

Tile is durable, easy to clean and available in endless styles. A tile floor lasts decades when the base is strong and the layout is planned. Poor prep causes cracks, loose tiles and uneven grout. NorTech connects you with vetted tile pros who set their own price and take care of layout, setting and finishing.

Layout, tile selection and planning

A good tile job starts with a layout that avoids tiny cut pieces at doorways and walls. The installer dry-fits tiles and decides where to start, considering patterns and focal points. Tile selection involves size, finish, slip resistance and rectified edges for tight grout lines. Order extra tile for cuts and future repairs. Ask for samples to check color in your lighting and under wet conditions. Walk through the layout with the installer before work starts, and agree on where tiles will be centered, where cuts will fall and how doorways will be finished.

Substrate prep and movement

Tile does not tolerate movement, so the base must be rigid and flat. Concrete is cleaned and checked for cracks, and wood subfloors get cement board or an uncoupling membrane. Isolation membranes protect against cracks in the slab. The installer uses the correct thinset and trowel, and ensures full coverage under each tile. Expansion joints and perimeter gaps allow for movement without breaking tiles. Ask which thinset, grout and sealer will be used, and whether the products are made for your tile type and for the moisture level of the room.

Grout, sealing and living with tile

Grout joints are cleaned, grouted and wiped, then sealed as needed. Epoxy grout resists stains better but is harder to work with. Cement grout needs sealing periodically. Keep tile clean with pH-neutral cleaners, avoid harsh acids and wipe up spills. Floors may feel cold, and radiant heat mats can warm them. Keep spare tiles for future repairs and note the grout color. Allow the floor to cure before heavy use, and keep spare tiles in a dry place so a future repair matches the original lot.

Cement grout is common and economical, epoxy resists stains and chemicals. Color and joint width also matter. Timing can vary with weather, access and permits, so ask for a realistic window.

Some are. Look for slip-resistance ratings, especially for wet areas and entries. Mention any special conditions at your property so the plan fits them. Ask your provider to confirm the details in writing before work starts.
