Subfloor Prep & Self-Leveling

Floors fail when the base is wrong: uneven spots show through, tile cracks and planks flex and separate. Preparing and leveling the subfloor gives the new surface a flat, strong foundation. NorTech connects you with vetted flooring pros who set their own price and measure flatness before and after.

Why flat matters and how it is measured

Most flooring manufacturers require subfloors to be flat within a small tolerance, such as 3/16 inch in ten feet. Dips and humps cause hollow spots, squeaks and failed joints, and large format tile is especially unforgiving. A pro uses a straightedge or laser to find problem areas and marks them. They also test moisture, since damp slabs can ruin adhesives and wood. Fixing the base is inexpensive compared with redoing a new floor. Mark any squeaks, soft spots or stains you know about before the visit, because they point to causes that leveling compound alone will not fix.

Grinding, repairing and filling

High spots are ground down, cracks are patched and loose boards are fastened. Old adhesive, paint and sealers are removed so new material bonds. Low spots are filled with patching compound or self-leveling underlayment. Primer is applied to control suction and promote adhesion. Contractors protect doors, drains and vents from flowing material and plan the pour so it can spread before it sets. Ask which underlayment product will be used, its maximum thickness and its drying time, so the flooring installer can schedule the next step.

Pouring, curing and readiness

Self-leveling underlayment is mixed and poured, then spread with a gauge rake and smoothing tool. It flows into an even surface and sets in hours, though full cure times vary. Temperature and ventilation matter. Foot traffic is limited at first, and the flooring installer should confirm moisture and flatness before starting. Ask for the product data sheet, including maximum thickness and compatibility with your flooring. Keep the room closed and the temperature steady while the underlayment cures, since drafts and heat can cause cracking or uneven setting.
