Rough Framing & Wall Framing

Framing is the skeleton of every remodel and addition, and everything that follows depends on it being straight, strong and accurate. Walls that are out of plumb or openings that are the wrong size cause problems for every trade. NorTech connects you with vetted licensed carpenters who set their own price and who build to the plans, the code and the inspector.

Reading the plans and laying out the walls

Good framing begins long before the first stud is cut. The carpenter studies the plans, checks measurements against the actual floor and marks wall lines, door and window openings and corners. Layout must account for the thickness of drywall, trim and cabinets that will go on later, since small errors multiply as the project continues. If the plans call for engineered headers, hold-downs or shear panels, those details are confirmed before building starts. Ask to review the layout with you before the walls go up, because changing a mark on the floor is far cheaper than moving a finished wall.

Building walls that are straight, plumb and strong

Studs are normally spaced at sixteen inches on center, with doubled studs at openings and corners and headers sized for the load above. Crown the lumber consistently, use straight stock and keep plates level so that drywall and cabinets fit without shimming. Blocking is added where you plan to hang heavy items such as cabinets, handrails, TVs and grab bars. Fastening follows the nailing schedule in the plans, and structural walls may need sheathing, straps and hold-downs. A careful crew checks plumb, level and square as they work.

Inspections, coordination and what comes next

Framing is inspected before it is covered, usually together with the rough electrical and plumbing. The carpenter leaves access for those trades and drills or notches framing only within code limits. Coordinate with the electrician and plumber so that boxes, pipes and ducts are planned before walls close. Take photos of every wall before insulation and drywall go in, because they show where blocking and utilities live. Keep the permit card and inspection sign-off with your project records.

Frequently asked

Rough Framing & Wall Framing — common questions

A single room of partition walls can be framed in a day or two, while a whole addition takes weeks. Weather, material delivery and inspections affect the schedule, so ask for a day-by-day plan.

Often yes, especially for structural walls, additions and changes to openings. Non-structural partitions may be exempt in some places. Your licensed carpenter will tell you what applies in your city and arrange inspections.

Most framing uses kiln-dried Douglas fir or similar, with treated lumber where wood touches concrete. Engineered products are used for long spans and heavy loads. The plans or the engineer decide.

Yes, but load-bearing walls need engineered beams and temporary supports. A non-load-bearing wall is simpler. Describe your goals so the carpenter can inspect and advise.

Old houses are rarely perfectly square. The carpenter measures the real conditions and adjusts layout details, and flags any plan conflicts before cutting lumber. Timing can vary with weather, access and permits, so ask for a realistic window.

The carpenter guarantees the framing workmanship for 90 days, including plumb, level and square within normal tolerances. Later movement from settling or moisture and changes by other trades are outside the guarantee.
