Beam & Header Installation

A beam or header replaces the support a wall used to give, so that rooms can open up or a new door and window can be cut into a bearing wall. The design must carry the load all the way to the foundation. NorTech connects you with a verified licensed carpenter who studies the engineering and the house and bids the work in writing.

Why beams need engineering and load paths

Every load above a beam travels through it into posts and down to the footing, and each link must be strong enough. An engineer calculates the span, the loads, the beam size and the post and footing requirements, producing drawings that the city reviews. A contractor should never size a structural beam by guesswork. Your carpenter coordinates with the engineer, orders the beam and confirms that the posts land on solid support at every level. Bring the engineering drawings, the permit card and any photos of the attic and crawlspace to the first meeting, so the bid reflects the real structure.

Shoring, removal and setting the beam

Before the wall or old header is removed, temporary posts or beams carry the load. The beam is lifted into place, often by several workers or with a small lift, and set on bearing plates or hangers. Fasteners follow the engineer’s schedule, and gaps are shimmed tight so that the beam takes load right away. Once the permanent supports are secure, the temporary shoring is removed in careful steps. Expect some noise, dust and disruption to the rooms above and below.

Inspection, finishing and living with the result

The building inspector verifies the beam, the connections and the posts before they are covered. Then drywall, trim and paint finish the surfaces, and the beam can be hidden in the ceiling or left exposed as a wood or steel feature. Ask about ceiling height changes, flooring above and any plumbing or ducts that need moving. Keep the engineering drawings, the permit and the inspection card in your home file for future owners. Ask who is responsible for repairing drywall, flooring and paint around the beam, since those finishes often need attention after structural work.

Frequently asked

Beam & Header Installation — common questions

Spans, loads, access and finishes differ in every house. The contractor needs the engineering and a look at the site to write a scope and price that will hold up when the walls are opened.

For beams and headers that carry load, yes. The engineer provides sizes and details that the city reviews, and the carpenter builds to those drawings. Ask your provider to confirm the details in writing before work starts.

Setting a beam often takes a day or two, with additional time for utilities, patching and finishes. Permits and engineering come first and may take weeks. A short written scope keeps expectations clear for both sides.

Often, if there is enough depth in the ceiling joists, and sometimes it hangs below as a feature. The engineer and the carpenter will explain the options. Photos and written notes make it easier to document and compare options.

Loads must reach the foundation, which may require new footings below the posts. The engineer calls for them in the drawings. Your provider can explain how this applies to your property before you book.

The contractor guarantees its installation workmanship for 90 days after completion. The engineered materials carry manufacturer terms, and design questions are covered by the engineer’s own responsibility.
