Excavation for Foundations & Additions
Every addition and new building begins with a hole in the right place and at the right depth. Excavation sets the stage for the footings, and mistakes in depth, width or soil handling can cost a lot to correct. NorTech connects you with a verified licensed earthwork contractor who visits, plans the dig around utilities and soil, and bids the work in writing.

Planning the dig around plans, utilities and soil
A good excavation starts with the engineered plans, a survey and a call to the digging hotline to mark buried utilities. The contractor checks property lines, setbacks, access for equipment and where soil can be stockpiled or hauled. Soil type matters because sand, clay and rock behave differently and affect trench stability and drainage. A geotechnical report, when available, guides depth and slope. Walking the site with the contractor before work begins avoids surprises and protects trees, fences and neighbors.
Digging to depth, shoring and safety
Footings must bear on undisturbed soil at the depth the engineer specifies, so the crew digs carefully, squares the trenches and removes loose material. Deep or unstable trenches require shoring, benching or sloped walls to keep workers safe, and groundwater may need pumping. The contractor works with the building inspector, who checks depth and soil before steel and forms go in. Spoils are stockpiled in a safe spot or trucked away, and the open excavation is protected with barriers and covers.
Weather, access and cleanup
Rain turns excavations into mud and can undermine trenches, so schedules include weather buffers and drainage. Heavy equipment needs access, and temporary road or lawn protection may be required. The contractor limits dust and mud tracked onto streets, and cleans up as work proceeds. Agree on who handles spoil disposal and fill delivery. Photograph the open trenches and keep inspection cards with your project records. Keep the open trench protected from rain and kids, and ask the contractor to schedule the foundation inspection as soon as the digging is complete.
