Right plant, right place

Choose species that suit the soil, sun, space and climate of your yard. Consider mature height and spread, root habits, litter and water needs, and keep trees away from foundations, power lines and pipes. Nurseries sell healthy, well-rooted stock, and the contractor can advise on varieties and sizes. A smaller tree often establishes faster, while a larger one gives instant effect and costs more. Ask for a list of the plants with their sizes and care needs before anything is ordered.

Planting depth, soil and staking

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper, and set the root flare at or slightly above grade. Remove wire, burlap and strings that can girdle roots over time. Backfill with native soil, firm it gently and water in well. Stake only if the tree is loose or the site is windy, using flexible ties for a year or less. A ring of mulch keeps moisture in and mowers away from the trunk, and a shallow basin holds water over the roots. Water the hole before planting if the soil is dry.

Watering and aftercare

New trees need deep, regular watering for the first two years, and a basin or bubbler makes it easier. Do not overfertilize, prune only damaged branches and watch for pests and stress. Check ties each season and remove stakes once the tree stands on its own. Keep the plant tags and nursery details, which help with replacement and care questions. A well-planted tree rewards you with shade and beauty for decades. Take a photo of each plant right after planting and again after a season, which helps you track growth and spot problems early.

Frequently asked

Tree & Shrub Planting — common questions

In mild climates, fall is ideal, with early spring next. Avoid planting in extreme heat or hard frost, and ask the contractor about timing for your area. Timing can vary with weather, access and permits, so ask for a realistic window.

The top of the root ball or root flare should sit at or slightly above ground level. Planting too deep is one of the most common causes of tree failure. Mention any special conditions at your property so the plan fits them.

Only when the tree is loose or the site is windy. Stakes should come off within a year so the trunk can strengthen. Timing can vary with weather, access and permits, so ask for a realistic window.

Deeply and regularly at first, then less often as roots grow. The contractor can give a schedule and set up a drip line or bubbler. If you are unsure, describe your situation when you book and ask for advice.

Some contractors replace plants that fail within a period if care instructions were followed. Ask for the plant warranty terms in the bid. Raise any questions at the estimate stage so there are no surprises later.

The contractor guarantees planting workmanship for 60 days. Survival depends on weather, watering and care, and plant terms are discussed in the bid. Keep copies of invoices and reports with your home records for future reference.
