Sub-Panel Installation

When the main panel is full or far away from where you need power, a sub-panel is the answer. It brings a new set of breakers to a garage, workshop, addition or ADU, fed by a single properly sized cable from the main panel. NorTech connects you with vetted licensed electricians who set their own price and pull the permit for you.

When a sub-panel makes sense

A sub-panel is useful when you are adding a room, finishing a garage, building a workshop or starting an ADU and your main panel has no space or is a long way off. It lets you place breakers close to the new loads, which shortens circuit runs and simplifies future additions. An electrician first checks the main service capacity, because a small service cannot carry unlimited new loads even when there is a place to put breakers. Bring a list of every load you expect now and later, since a sub-panel is much cheaper to size correctly the first time.

Sizing the feeder and the panel

The feeder is the heavy cable that connects the main panel to the sub-panel, and its size depends on the expected load and the distance. Too small a feeder causes voltage drop and overheating, while an oversized one raises cost. The electrician calculates the load, selects the panel, chooses conduit or cable and runs separate neutral and ground conductors in the sub-panel, which is required by code. Ask for the calculation in writing if you plan big loads such as welders or EV chargers.

Permits, labeling and future-proofing

A sub-panel installation needs a permit and an inspection in most areas, so the work is checked before the walls are closed. Every breaker should be labeled clearly, and a spare space or two makes later additions easy. If you expect to add more loads, discuss it now so the electrician can leave room and select a panel with room to grow. Keep the permit and a photo of the panel schedule in your home file. Ask for a printed panel directory with circuit names and breaker sizes, which helps the next electrician and any future inspection.

Frequently asked

Sub-Panel Installation — common questions

The electrician will calculate your load to find out. If the main service is small, they may suggest a service upgrade before or along with the sub-panel.

Yes. The feeder runs underground or overhead as allowed by code, with a disconnect and grounding at the building. This is a more involved installation, reflected in the trench option.

A basic sub-panel with a short feeder often takes a day. Longer feeders, trenching or many circuits add time, and the inspection comes at the end. Ask about the exact feeder cable size.

Yes in almost all cases. Your licensed electrician takes care of the application and the inspection appointments. Ask for the permit number for your records.

Usually, if there is room in the panel and capacity in the feeder. Ask the electrician to leave spare spaces so you do not need a second panel. Ask for a panel schedule at the end.

The installation work, including the feeder, breakers and connections, carries a 90-day guarantee from the electrician. Breakers and panels have separate manufacturer terms, and any damage from overloading is not included.
