Solar System Inspection

Solar panels are supposed to be quiet work, but loose connectors, shaded strings, a failing inverter or a bird nest can quietly cut production. Sometimes the first sign is just a smaller savings than you expected. A licensed inspection looks at the system as a whole and tells you what is working and what is not. NorTech connects you with licensed independent providers who set their own price.

What can go wrong with a working-looking system

Panels degrade slowly, but sudden drops often come from the inverter, loose or corroded connectors, damaged wiring or shading from a tree that grew. Debris and nesting animals can cause hot spots and reduce output. Mounting hardware can loosen or leak around roof penetrations. An inspector checks each of these parts and compares production data with what the system should produce in your location and season. Share your monitoring login or recent production reports before the visit, because the inspector can compare real output with what the array should deliver.

Inspecting for a purchase, a warranty or a claim

If you are buying a home with solar, a third-party inspection shows whether the system is in good order and worth the value assigned to it. If you are filing a warranty claim or an insurance claim after a storm, a report with photos and test results supports your case. Ask the inspector to document serial numbers, inverter error codes and the condition of the roof around the array, since those details help a manufacturer or insurer evaluate the claim.

Cleaning, monitoring and getting more from the system

A yearly look at the array and the monitoring app can catch most problems before they cost you production. Cleaning can recover output in dusty or bird-heavy areas, and trimming nearby trees can remove shade. Ask your inspector about the monitoring system and how to read it. If the inspection finds an issue, a licensed solar contractor can repair it, and the report tells them exactly where to start. Keep the report with your warranty papers and the installer paperwork so you have everything together if a manufacturer asks for proof of the problem.

Frequently asked

Solar System Inspection — common questions

Electrical work on solar systems is licensed work in California, and inspectors who test or repair equipment usually hold the appropriate contractor license. Ask for the number and check it.

Often, with proper fall protection, though some inspections use a drone or ground view. Tell the provider about roof type and slope when you book. Mention steep roofs, tile or fragile surfaces when you book so the right crew comes.

Some providers also repair, while others only inspect. Ask which applies, and whether any repair is priced separately from the inspection. Ask beforehand whether repairs will be quoted on site or after the report.

Inspectors compare production data and electrical readings to expected values for the system size and local conditions. Thermal imaging can find hot spots.

Many inspections include batteries and their connections. Mention yours so the inspector brings the right tools and checks the settings. Share your monitoring app login if you are comfortable doing so.

The 30-day workmanship warranty covers the inspection as described, including correcting factual errors. It does not guarantee future production. A clear inverter model number on the booking helps the technician prepare.
