Remodel Plumbing Rough-In

Rough-in is the stage where plumbing disappears into the walls and floors, and getting it right avoids leaks and change orders later. It happens after framing and before insulation and drywall, with a city inspection in between. NorTech connects you with a verified licensed plumber who reviews your plans and bids the rough-in in writing.

What rough-in includes and when it happens

Rough-in covers the pipes inside walls, floors and ceilings: hot and cold supply lines, drain and vent piping, gas lines, shutoff valves and the stub-outs where fixtures will connect. The plumber works from the plans and the fixture schedule, after the framing is complete and before insulation and drywall. Good timing matters, because other trades need to know where pipes will run and the framer may need to notch or drill members in approved ways.

Planning fixtures, materials and layout

Final fixture choices drive rough-in dimensions, so decide on toilets, vanities, tubs, shower valves and appliances before the plumber begins. Pipe materials such as PEX, copper, ABS and cast iron have different costs, noise levels and code limits. A good plan keeps runs short, places shutoffs where you can reach them and leaves access to valves and cleanouts. Ask the plumber to mark pipe locations on the framing for later reference. Ask the plumber to mark where each stub-out and valve sits on the framing with a permanent marker, so cabinet and drywall crews can avoid them.

Testing, inspection and protecting the work

The plumber pressure-tests the supply system and water-tests the drains, then calls for a rough inspection. Walls cannot be closed until the inspector signs off. Protect exposed pipes from freezing and damage, and ensure other trades do not puncture them with nails or screws. Photograph the finished rough-in before insulation goes in and keep the photos, since they are valuable when you hang cabinets or later repair a leak. Review the fixture schedule one more time before rough-in starts, since a different toilet or shower valve can change where the pipes need to go.

Frequently asked

Remodel Plumbing Rough-In — common questions

Every project has different plans, fixtures and structure. A plumber reviews the drawings or visits the site and writes a scope that matches the real work.

Drawings, a fixture and appliance schedule, and any constraints such as slab or crawlspace access. The more complete the information, the more accurate the bid.

Your general contractor usually coordinates, though the plumber communicates directly with framers and electricians about pipe routes and clearances. Ask for weekly updates on the schedule.

After the rough plumbing is complete and tested, before insulation and drywall. The plumber schedules it with the city. Ask to see the inspection card when it is signed.

Small changes are possible, but moving valves or drains after the rough-in is costly. Finalize fixture selections before the work begins. Ask whether any change orders are priced in the bid.

The plumber guarantees the installed piping and joints for 90 days after final inspection. Damage caused by other trades or later alterations is outside the guarantee.
