Rebar Placement for Foundations
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, and reinforcing steel gives it the tensile strength to resist cracking and earthquakes. Rebar must be placed in exact locations with the right cover. NorTech connects you with a verified licensed reinforcing contractor who works from the engineer’s plans and bids the work in writing.

Reading the drawings and bar schedule
Structural drawings show the size, spacing, length and shape of each bar. A bar schedule lists every piece. The contractor orders steel, cuts and bends bars, and tags them for placement. Mistakes in size or spacing can fail inspection, so the crew double-checks the drawings. Any change needs the engineer’s approval before concrete is poured. Share the latest engineering revision with the crew, since out-of-date drawings are a leading cause of wrong bar sizes and failed inspections.
Placement, cover and tying
Bars are positioned with chairs or spacers so they sit at the right height, with enough concrete cover to protect against corrosion. Intersections are tied with wire, and laps are made to specified lengths. Dowels connect footings to walls and columns, and anchor bolts are placed to match the framing layout. The crew keeps steel clean and off the ground until concrete is placed. Ask how the steel will be protected from mud, rain and foot traffic before the pour, and who will check it right before the concrete trucks arrive.
Inspection, pour readiness and protection
The building inspector or special inspector checks the steel before the pour. The crew corrects any issues, and the concrete crew must avoid moving the bars during placement. Rain can rust steel, but light surface rust is normal. Keep inspection cards with your records. Photograph the placed steel and keep the inspection card, because the steel disappears into the concrete and is hard to verify later. Agree with the concrete contractor on the pour date in advance, so steel is not left exposed for long and the inspector can see it just before concrete.
